Spring came with a surprise on our farm! When we went out to check on our chickens, we discovered three broody hens huddled togetherâsitting on a massive pile of eggs. It was both hilarious and chaotic, as they were practically on top of each other, all determined to be the best mother hen. But, as we quickly learned, not all mother hens are created equal!
The Broody Hen Drama: A Tale of Three Mothers
Trying to separate the hens into individual nesting boxes seemed like a great idea at first. After all, giving each of them their own space would ensure that the eggs were well cared for. However, our hens had a different plan.
As soon as I reached in to move them, I was met with angry pecksâthese mamas were not happy about my interference! đđą They were fiercely protective of their eggs, and I quickly learned that disturbing a broody hen is a battle you donât want to fight unprepared.
But the real shocker? One of the hens turned out to be a terrible mother! Instead of nurturing her eggs, she started throwing them out of the nest! đ± We had to act fast to separate her from the group before more eggs were lost.
Keeping Our Chicks Warm in a Cold Florida Spell
Just when we thought we had everything under control, nature threw another challenge our wayâa cold spell in South Florida. âïž This was definitely not ideal for fragile, newborn chicks who rely on warmth to survive.
With no time to spare, we MacGyvered a heat lamp in the coop to keep them warm. The little chicks immediately huddled under the glow, chirping happily, and we knew we had done the right thing. Itâs amazing how farm life teaches you to think on your feet!
Life on the Farm: Never a Dull Moment
Raising baby chicks is always an adventure, and this experience reminded us just how unpredictable farm life can be. From protective hens to bad moms and unexpected weather challenges, every day brings something new. But in the end, seeing those tiny, fluffy chicks thriving makes all the effort worth it.
